A Scientist in the Courtroom

Elena Vance brings a rare combination of scientific training and legal expertise to criminal defense. Before attending law school, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Colorado State University, where she studied analytical chemistry and forensic science. That background gives her a technical edge that few defense attorneys possess — she understands the science behind breathalyzer calibration, blood alcohol testing protocols, gas chromatography results, and drug identification methods at a level that allows her to challenge forensic evidence on its own terms.

Elena earned her Juris Doctor from Georgetown University Law Center, where she focused on criminal law and trial advocacy. After graduating, she returned to Colorado to practice defense law, driven by a conviction that the justice system too often relies on flawed science to secure convictions. She joined Blackwood Defense to work alongside attorneys who share her commitment to holding the state to its burden of proof.

DUI Defense Expertise

With over 200 DUI cases handled, Elena has developed a commanding understanding of Colorado’s DUI laws, penalties, and defense strategies. She is certified in Standardized Field Sobriety Testing (SFST) through the same program used to train law enforcement officers. That certification allows her to identify when officers administer tests incorrectly, misinterpret results, or draw conclusions that the science does not support.

Her approach to DUI defense is methodical. She examines every detail of the traffic stop — whether the officer had reasonable suspicion to pull the driver over, whether field sobriety tests were administered under proper conditions, whether breath or blood samples were collected and stored according to protocol. When the evidence is compromised, she moves aggressively to suppress it. When the case goes to trial, she uses her scientific background to educate juries on the limitations of the tests the prosecution presents as definitive.

Client Advocacy

Elena is known among her clients for being direct, responsive, and tireless. She understands that a DUI or drug charge can upend a person’s career, family, and future, and she treats every case with the urgency it deserves. She takes the time to walk clients through every stage of the process, from arraignment through resolution, so they are never left guessing about what comes next.

Outside the courtroom, Elena stays current on developments in forensic science and DUI law by attending national defense conferences and contributing to continuing legal education seminars. She is an active member of the National College for DUI Defense and the Colorado Criminal Defense Bar Association.
